PITTSBURGH, April 11, 2020 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- Mylan Inc. today announced that it has received approval from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the generic version of the blockbuster prescription drug Celebrex (celecoxib). The generic form of Celebrex is currently marketed as a single-dose, 400 mg capsule once daily, USP (Effexor®).
The Celebrex brand has already been available in the U. market for more than two decades. It is currently the second-most-prescription-drug-ever brand worldwide for Celebrex. In 2014, Celebrex was the 9th most-prescribed prescription drug worldwide, accounting for more than 95% of all prescriptions filled.
This is part of a broader effort to improve healthcare access and affordability for consumers throughout the world. It will be presented at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) annual meeting in San Francisco later this year.
Currently, Mylan has only had tentative approval from the FDA for the single-dose, 400 mg capsule once-daily form of Celebrex from December 1, 2014, through December 31, 2015, when the generic version of the drug, Celebrex 200 mg once daily, was approved. Mylan has been able to secure additional approval for the generic form for several other prescription medications, including brand-name Vioxx® (rofecoxib) from the FDA in July 2014, and Vioxx® (celecoxib) from Merck & Co., Inc. in December 2014. The generic form of Celebrex is currently available in the U. market at approximately the same cost.
Mylan, Inc. also announced today that it has received final approval from the FDA for the single-dose, 400 mg capsule once-daily formulation of Vioxx® from October 22, 2014, through October 31, 2015. This approval follows recent FDA approvals of Celebrex 200 mg once-daily from July 2014 through October 2014.
As of December 31, 2015, Vioxx® has not yet received approval from the FDA for the generic form of Celebrex from its manufacturer, Merck & Co., Inc. (MSK).
On July 28, 2015, Merck & Company Inc., the generic version of Vioxx®, announced that it had received final approval from the FDA for the brand-name drug Celebrex® from its manufacturer, Eli Lilly and Company (LLC).
The company is continuing to work with manufacturers of generic Celebrex to develop and commercialize the product.
On August 7, 2015, Eli Lilly announced that its U. subsidiary, Lilly ICOS, had received approval from the FDA for the generic version of the drug. In the same press release, Eli Lilly also announced that it had received final approval from the FDA for the brand-name Celebrex® from its manufacturer, Novartis AG (Novo Nordisk).
The company continued to work with manufacturers of generics to develop and commercialize the product, including Novartis, to meet the stringent regulatory requirements set out in the Novartis Act, which are similar to those for the prescription drug Celebrex® (celecoxib) and the branded Celebrex® (celecoxib).
On August 17, 2015, the FDA approved Celebrex 200 mg once-daily from its drug, Celebrex 200 mg once daily, to the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Pfizer has agreed to pay $2.5bn to settle a lawsuit alleging that it was under a cloud after the company’s patents on the drug, Celebrex, expired last year. The company was in talks to resolve the allegations on Monday, but the deal was rejected by the US Justice Department.
The US Justice Department has been investigating claims that Pfizer’s patent on Celebrex expired in May. The company was forced to pull the medicine from the market in November due to increased sales of the drug, which is linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Pfizer has said that it has ‘no intention’ to sell Celebrex, a drug that has been used for over a decade to treat a range of conditions, including arthritis and a range of pain-relieving medications.
Celebrex, which is used to treat the same conditions as Propecia and Vioxx, is the company’s most popular arthritis medication, and was the company’s first-choice treatment for those conditions.
Celebrex, which is being challenged by a New York man who alleged that the medicine was used to treat heart attacks and strokes, has been under investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration.
The Pfizer drugmaker has also been given an $8.5bn (£2.1bn) payment from the US Food and Drug Administration to resolve claims that it was under fire from the pharmaceutical industry because of its patents, which expired in 2006.
The company also is expected to pay $2.2bn to settle lawsuits in the US, with some of the latter claims alleging that the company was under pressure to increase its profits by charging higher prices.
The US Justice Department said the suit, filed in federal court in New Jersey, had been brought by a woman who claimed that Pfizer had overcharged her for her Celebrex prescription, which was not approved by the FDA.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in New Jersey, alleges that the company ‘retreated, and then continued to charge consumers higher prices on Celebrex,’ according to a Pfizer spokesman.
The FDA has been under pressure to approve more Celebrex drugs, which are widely used to treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is not clear whether those conditions are related to the company’s patents.
The suit was filed in 2010 in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The suit seeks to recover $25.3bn of the $4bn that was paid by Pfizer to settle the claims of the company. It was filed on April 28, 2010.
A Pfizer spokesman said: ‘Pfizer is aware of the allegations made against it and believes that this matter is being handled with the utmost seriousness. We will vigorously defend our position as the responsible party in this matter.’
In a statement to Reuters, Pfizer said the settlement is ‘not just a resolution of the allegations raised, but a payment of $2.5bn’ to settle the claims.
Celebrex was the first arthritis medication to have been approved by the FDA and was first marketed in the US in 1998.The lawsuit was brought by a woman who claimed that Pfizer overcharged her for her Celebrex prescription, which was not approved by the FDA. She alleged that the drug was being used to treat pain in a ‘rather than an active substance’.
The suit is against the company’s patents for Celebrex. The patent for the drug expired in May 2010.
Pfizer said the ‘pursuit of more than $4bn’ would ‘constitute a substantial additional burden of bringing this matter to the attention of the courts’.’
The case is the latest in a long series of claims filed against Pfizer by a man accused of allegedly failing to take proper steps to lower his prescription costs, which were not covered by the company’s patents.
The suit was filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia against a woman who claimed that Pfizer overcharged her for her Celebrex prescription, which was not approved by the FDA.
The woman, who said that she was only using the drug for a short time, was told by Pfizer that it was unlikely that it would be able to cover the $4bn it charged for her Celebrex prescription, according to the suit.
